
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Wet Zones
Putting infrared lamps in a steamy bathroom or a damp outdoor patio is a bit of a gamble. Here’s why: water vapor loves to settle on energized parts, and once it does, it creates a path for electricity to wander where it shouldn’t. That’s how you get current leakage. To stop that from happening, we focus on two things: the strength of the housing and making sure the seals are actually airtight.
Stopping the Leak
You can’t just trust the lamp to do the heavy lifting. You need a whole system that keeps the live heating element far away from the chassis. We use high-grade ceramic insulators at the ends of the lamps to stop arcing. In a humid room, moisture can easily bridge the gap between the lamp pins and the metal reflector. It’s a recipe for disaster. That’s why we use seals with an IP65 rating or better. It basically acts as a wall, blocking water from sneaking into the wiring.
The Battle with Heat and Expansion
Quartz tubes are tricky. They expand when they get hot and shrink when they cool down. Do that a few hundred times, and your seals start to loosen. We use silicone-based gaskets because they can handle that constant “breathing” without giving up. If a seal fails, steam gets into the electrical junction and just fries the connection. And a quick tip on the wires: don’t use standard PVC. It’ll melt. Go with fiberglass or silicone sleeves if you don’t want your wiring to turn into a puddle and cause a short circuit.
The Big Trade-off
Here is the catch. If you seal the electrical compartment completely to keep the moisture out, you’re also trapping the heat inside. If there’s no way for that heat to escape, your internal wiring will cook itself. It’s a balancing act. You want that high IP rating for safety, but you also need a smart heat-sink design so the electronics don’t fry. And for peace of mind? Always run these through a GFCI. It’ll kill the power the very millisecond it detects a leak, which is exactly what you want when water and electricity are in the same room.
