
Making Bathroom Heaters That Won’t Blind You (or Short Out)
Designing an infrared heater for a bathroom is a bit of a balancing act. You aren’t just fighting the cold; you’re fighting water and light. See, a standard IR lamp can be way too intense. If the light spectrum isn’t dialed in, it can actually be dangerous for a user’s eyes—especially for babies. Nobody wants a heater that doubles as a blinding spotlight.
Getting the light right
Most industrial lamps just blast everything at once. For a bathroom, we do things differently. We use specific quartz glass and coatings to kill off those harsh blue-light peaks. By shifting the energy toward the long-wave infrared range, the heat hits your skin, but the glare doesn’t hit your eyes. You get that instant, cozy warmth without feeling like you’re staring into a welding torch.
Dealing with the splash zone
Water and high-voltage electricity? Not a great mix. That’s why we build these to an IPX5 standard. In plain English: you can spray these things with water from any angle and they won’t quit. We use high-temp silicone gaskets and sealed cable entries to lock out the moisture. If a seal leaks, the whole thing shorts out or the element burns. Not an option.
The give and take
Here’s the tricky part. You can’t have a totally opaque filter and still get a ton of heat. It’s always a trade-off between eye safety and how fast the room warms up. A heavy filter blocks some of the wattage. To fix that, we have to run the element at a higher temperature. This puts more stress on the quartz tube, so you’ve got to make sure your ventilation is spot on. Otherwise, the housing itself starts to get too hot. One last thing: please, wire these into a dedicated circuit with a proper GFCI. It’s the only way to sleep soundly knowing the system is safe in a steamy room.
