Getting Infrared Heating Right for Big Glass Annealing Tunnels
If you’re trying to get rid of internal stress in glass, you know the temperature gradient has to be spot on. But here’s the problem: once your tunnel kiln gets longer than 2 meters, the standard lamps you buy off a shelf just don’t do the job. That’s where we come in. We build custom, continuous infrared heating units specifically for those oversized tunnels that make standard gear look like toys.
Stopping the “Cold Spot” Nightmare
The biggest headache with a heating zone over 2 meters? Cold spots. They ruin everything. Instead of just slapping in a few high-wattage lamps and hoping for the best, we use continuous lamp arrays. We spread the heat across a series of matched quartz elements. This means your glass feels a steady, uniform soak of heat the entire time it’s moving through the tunnel. We’ll sit down with you and figure out the exact wattage per centimeter based on how thick your glass is and how fast your line is moving.
The Nitty-Gritty of the Build
We use high-purity quartz envelopes because they can actually handle the heat without giving up. But honestly, the wiring is where most people get tripped up. It’s the boring stuff that causes the biggest failures. We customize the lead-wire lengths and the connectors so you aren’t fighting with tension or dealing with terminals that get way too hot. Depending on how deep you need that heat to sink into the glass, we can set you up with either shortwave or medium-wave emitters.
A Word of Caution on Heat
Here’s the thing: high-density infrared arrays put out a massive amount of energy, and they do it fast. If your kiln’s chassis or cooling fans aren’t up to the task, all that reflected heat has nowhere to go. If your ventilation is weak, your lamp housings will basically bake themselves, and your electrical insulation will fry. It’s a mess. If you’re pushing more than 2000W per linear meter, we strongly suggest a dedicated cooling loop. It’s the only way to keep the system stable when you’re running 24/7.
