
Stop Treating Your IR Tubes Like Light Bulbs
Here’s the thing: ordering a clear quartz infrared tube based on just the dimensions and wattage is a total gamble. A lot of people treat these things like they’re buying a 60-watt bulb for a desk lamp. But they aren’t. These are precision tools. If your voltage is slightly off or your reflector is looking a bit tired, you aren’t just losing heat. You’re basically paying to burn out your filaments way faster than you should.
The reality of heat and power
We use clear quartz because it’s great at letting shortwave radiation pass through without soaking it up. But when you try to cram high wattage into a tiny footprint, you’re cranking up the power density. That puts a massive amount of stress on the tungsten filament. If you push a high-wattage tube without thinking about how your housing handles the heat, things get messy. The heat builds up, concentrates at the seal, and—snap—the glass cracks. That’s why we don’t just toss a tube in a box and ship it. We want to make sure your airflow can actually handle the BTUs you’re throwing at it.
It’s all about the fit
Then there are the connectors. Whether you’re using an R7s or a specialized SK15, the connection has to be rock solid. Loose contacts are a nightmare. They create hotspots that melt your sockets and cause your power to dip in and out. It’s frustrating and dangerous. We look at the whole loop. We check your lead wire gauge and what’s coming out of the transformer. A 400V system puts out incredible heat, but it’s picky. Even a tiny 5% jump in voltage can cut the life of your lamps in half. Just like that.
Finding the sweet spot
You can always push a quartz tube to hit higher temperatures faster. Sure, you can. But you’ll pay for it. There’s always a tug-of-war between how fast you want to ramp up and how many hours the lamp will actually last. We’re here to help you find that middle ground.
